In the Basmanny Court of the capital of the Russian Federation, they decided to arrest the assistant to the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Sergei Umnov. He is accused of abuse of power, according to RIA Novosti.
In addition, the court arrested a retired major general, ex-deputy head of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, Ivan Abakumov. He is also accused of abuse of power.
The court session was held behind closed doors to protect the data of prosecution witnesses and prevent disclosure of the investigation materials, the deadline for which was set until October 5.
Earlier it was reported that that the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation asked to arrest the defendants in the case of abuse of power by employees of the Main Directorate of Internal Affairs of Russia in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region.
A criminal case on abuse of power against the defendants was initiated in the summer of 2020. According to the investigation, from 2016 to 2020, officials from among the senior staff of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region acquired property for personal use at the expense of the Main Directorate's Program Assistance Fund.
